Bible Text: Genesis 39:6-12, Genesis 40:1-8, Genesis 41:1, Genesis 41:39-40, Genesis 45:1-9 | Presenter: Rev. James Destine | Series: Worldview | I fail to see the purpose.

What am I here for?

What’s the meaning of life?

What do you do when all life seems to be is one bad swing after another

The life of Joseph:

Sold into slavery at 16
10 years as Potiphar’s slave then household overseer
Jailed for more than 3 years
He was cut off from his family, his people and his church

How does one find meaning, discover their life’s purpose when every swing they take in life the ball remain unmoved?

It all hinges on a coherent answer to these four questions:

Origin: Who am I?
Meaning: What is my life’s purpose?
Morality: What’s the standard for right and wrong?
Destiny: Is there life after death?

The first step to finding meaning in life is to know who you are.

He knew he was not a primate of a single cell that evolved by accident.
He knew he was God’s creation. that he was made in the image of God and in God’s likeness.

Why is it important to know that?

You can only know who you are, when you know whose you are.
Not by accident, but by design.
You are God’s masterpiece.

Do you know your life’s purpose?

Meaning what are you here for?

Genesis 45: 4-8

To enhance God’s reputation wherever we are on this earth.

Joseph knew what his life’s purpose was:

In the pit
As Pothiphar’s  slave and servant

Genesis 39:6-10

Joseph had many excuses to fall with Pothiphar’s wife:

“The temptation was too hard; I became weak. After all I’m a guy.”
Revenge sex
Bragging rights with the boys

Joseph knew his purpose (in the pit, at Pothiphar’s house, whether as a slave or an overseer) was to enhance God’s reputation.

Genesis 39:11-12

In The dungeon

Genesis 40: 1-8

Genesis 40:23

What happens when you are passed up for a promotion?

What happens when you are in a ministry that sometimes seems to be going nowhere?

What happens when you are questioning yourself, is it worth it?

Joseph did his best work in the dungeon.

Wherever you may be, know you are there to enhance God’s reputation.

Do your best work!

In the palace as second in command.

Genesis 41:1

“Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”

Genesis 41:39-40

Wherever Joseph was:

In the pit
Slavery
Overseer
Jail
Second in command

He had one purpose and one purpose only: to enhance God’s reputation.

“We started from the bottom now we here.”

Genesis 45:1-9
I hope you never lose your sense of wonder

You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger

May you never take one single breath for granted

God forbid love ever leave you empty-handed

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean

Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens

Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I hope you dance, I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance

Never settle for the path of least resistance

Livin’ might mean takin’ chances but they’re worth takin’

Lovin’ might be a mistake but it’s worth makin’

Don’t let some hell-bent heart leave you bitter

When you come close to sellin’ out reconsider

Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I hope you dance, I hope you dance

I hope you dance, I hope you dance
